To ensure a perfect fit and safe operation, you’ll need four key measurements before purchasing a replacement torsion spring for a mini warehouse or self-storage door.
Wire Size
Inside Diameter (ID)
Spring Length
Wind Direction (Left or Right)
Wire size can be determined using one of the following tools:
Caliper
Micrometer
Wire gauge
If none of these are available, measure ten coils of tightly compressed spring wire to the nearest 1/16", then refer to a spring wire chart to determine the wire size. For added accuracy, measure twenty coils and divide accordingly.
Measure the inside diameter of the spring (not including the cone) to the nearest 1/16 of an inch. This measurement helps match your spring to the correct manufacturer standard.
Measure the spring in its fully unwound (relaxed) state. If the spring is broken or distorted:
Count the total number of coils
Multiply by the wire size
Examples:
120 coils × 0.250 wire = 30"
120 coils × 0.375 wire = 45"
To determine the correct wind:
Do not rely on which side of the door the spring is mounted on
Refer to a winding chart
Most winding cones are color-coded:
Red = Right-Hand Wound
Black = Left-Hand Wound
Understanding the correct wind direction is essential for safe installation and smooth door operation.
